Closing lactations

The milk records for a particular lactation are associated with that Lactation record in the EasyKeeper database, giving you the ability to view each lactation's milk records as a "production report". By linking the milk records with the lactation, it also means you can get to-date reports on days in milk, daily average and milk production for the Current Lactation.

By closing the Lactation record by adding the Date Dried, you tell the system that your animal has finished her lactation and no more milk records will be added for that milking period. This allows the system to compute the lactation's total days in milk and the production information, and move the Lactation record to the animal's milk production History.

There are several ways you can close an animal's lactation:
  • Click the green checkmark icon in the icon row associated with the Lactation in the animal's Milk page
  • Enter the Date Dried into the animal's record on the Daily Milk Records Bulk Entry Form
  • When you add a new Lactation record, we'll prompt you to close the old one before continuing
There is only once case where the system will automatically close a Lactation record for you. When the animal dies, we close the Lactation based on the Status Update you've entered. In this situation, the date of death is considered a day in milk. If the animal was dried earlier than the date of death, you can edit the Date Dried in the Lactation record.
