Back-to-back lactations

When an animal has kidded without a dry period, close her prior lactation record before you add the new one to ensure her daily milk records are associated with the correct lactation, and the days in milk for each lactation are properly calculated.

In this event, use the date she kidded as the date dried for the Current Lactation as well as the start date for the new lactation. This will end the prior record on the day immediately preceding the kidding and create an uninterrupted period of milk production spanning the two lactations but allow for accurate reporting for each.

Closing the prior record in this manner complies with the National Dairy Herd Improvement Program Uniform Operating procedures (http://www.dhia.org/uop.pdf).
