Linking kid records from a Kidding to herd animals
You can link existing herd animals that have the Source "Born in my herd" to a Kid record in a Kidding event either when adding the Kidding or editing an existing Kidding event.
The benefit of linking these two records is that you can directly access the offspring's herd record when viewing the Kidding, and automatically updating the information in the herd animal record with the information from the Kidding event.
Some things to know:
- You can link herd animal with Kid records regardless of your "add kids to herd" setting.
- You can link herd animal with Kid records for Kidding events recorded for both does and bucks.
- When you link a herd animal with a Kid record, the herd animal's information will be updated with the information from the Kidding event.
How to link a kid record to a herd animal record
- While creating the Kid records when adding a Kidding
- When adding Kid records to an existing Kidding record
- By updating an existing Kid record that is not linked to a herd animal record. This case will be helpful for herds that choose not to add kids to the herd automatically when the Kidding event is recorded and add them once they have decided to retain them.
When adding a Kid record
When editing a Kid record
To link a herd animal to an existing Kid record, edit the Kidding event, click into the Kid record Name field, begin typing any part of the herd animal's Full Name and select it from the list as shown in the above video.
I am not seeing the herd animal I want in my search results
The herd animal search results function has built-in filters to help minimize the number of animals that return in the list and help prevent animals that could not logically be an offspring from a Kidding event that occurred in your herd from being linked to the kid record. These include the suppression of:
- Animals that are already linked to a kid record
- Animals that were purchased, or are leased or boarded into your herd
The selected animal could not be linked to the kid record
As the herd animal linking function supports linking Kiddings that occurred while the dam was in your herd -- and thus the kids were born in your herd -- when the linking action attempts to update the date the animal was born in your herd (its birth date), if there are any Status entries for that animal prior that date you will receive a notification after the Kidding is saved:

If you want to link the herd animal to the kid record you will first need to resolve the date conflicts by deleting the erroneous Status entries or updating the effective date for valid entries on the animal's Status page. Once you've made the corrections, edit the Kidding and link the two records.
What to do if you accidentally link the wrong herd animal to a Kid record
When you delete the Kid record, the herd animal record will be unlinked and available to be linked to another Kid record. We advise that you are cautious in linking to herd animals, as any information updated in the herd animal's record when it was linked to the Kid record will not be reset when it is unlinked.
