Automatically adding kids in Kidding events to the herd
When you have set your preference to automatically add kids to your herd when they are added to a does' Kidding event, a herd record will be created for every kid added to when the Kidding and Pregnancy terminated early Outcomes are selected. For the purpose of this article, both Outcomes are referred to as "Kidding".
IMPORTANT: If you created your EasyKeeper account before March 3, 2019 this feature may be turned off for your herd. To enable it, visit your Preferences & Settings page and select "Automatically add kids to herd from Kidding record".
In addition to creating a herd record for the Kid, the following information will be set in the herd animal record:
- The animal's Name and Barn/Nickname, if indicated
- Notes added in the kid record will be added to the Notes section of the animal's herd record.
- Weight events will be added to the herd animal record's Health page when a birth weight is indicated and the user is a Performance Plan user.
- Pedigrees will be automatically built based on the dam and sire info in the breeding record.
- The kids will display in the dam and sire's progeny lists and will include all kids, regardless of birth status.
- The conception type from the Kidding event, if indicated.
- The Source will be set as "Born in my Herd"
Note: Kids will not be created when adding Kidding records to Bucks, even when the "add kids to herd" setting is turned on.
All kids in the Kidding will be added to the herd
When the "add kids to herd" setting is turned on, a herd animal record will be added for every Kid in the Kidding record, regardless of the kid's birth status.
Kids that were recorded with the "Live" birth status will be immediately displayed in your scrolling herd list once the Kidding event is saved.
Kids that were recorded as "Stillborn" or "Died at Birth" will have a Deceased event added, so you won't see them in your herd list but they will be in reports.
Adding kids to herd via Edit Kidding
When the "add kids to herd" setting is turned on, you can add kids to a Kidding via an Edit Kidding action just as you would when adding the Kidding.
Kids that are already added to a Kidding -- but did not have a herd record created because the "add kids to herd" setting was turned off when the Kidding event was added -- will not be added to the herd when editing the Kidding. You will need to add these animals manually to the herd if you want herd records for them.
Creation of the Name and/or Barn/Nickname in the herd animal record when blank in the Kid record
The system requires a Full Name and a Barn/Nickname in the system so the animal has a unique id. Any kids saved without value in the Name and/or Barn/Nickname fields will have these values automatically created in the format of mother's nickname + date of birth + birth status + gender + our unique animal identifier (so it will look like "Daisy 2019-02-04 Live F 99862"). These names can be edited on the animal's Profile page.
Setting your preference to automatically add Kid records in a Kidding event
By default, your herd preference for automatically adding Kids to the herd will be turned on. To update your setting to prevent Kids from being added, go to the Preferences & Settings menu, select Data Preferences, Click the Edit Info link, and click the preference checkbox.
Conditions under which a herd animal cannot be created
If you have added a Kid record to a Kidding and the system was unable to create the record you will see the Kid record in Kidding, but the name will not be a blue link.
The most common case for this is there is already an animal in your herd that is an exact match on the Name field. As EasyKeeper requires a unique name for each animal in the herd, this is a measure to prevent adding animals with duplicate names.
If this occurs and the kid and the herd animal are two different animals, you can edit the Kidding, delete the Kid record and re-add it with a unique Name. Upon saving the Kidding a herd animal will be created for the Kid.
If the kid and the herd animal are one and the same, edit the Kidding and on the Kid Name field delete the Name value and begin typing it again; select the associated herd animal name from the select list that display.
