Adding animals using a US DHIR Herd Id
Step 1: Enter the US DHIR Herd Id into the lookup form, leaving out any dashes, then click the Continue button:
Note: If you have entered your US DHIR Herd Id into your account preferences, it will automatically prefill in the Herd Id field.
Step 2: Once the search has run, select the animal you want to add to your herd by checking the box to the right of its name:
Step 3: The Add Animal form will display with any information found in the database prefilled.
a. Complete the additional required data:
- Animal's Barn/Nickname
b. Add any additional information you may have:
- Other registration numbers
- Honor and award titles
- Herdbook/Register and/or Breed, if not prefilled
- Date of Birth, if not prefilled
- Animal name, if not prefilled
- Pedigree information, if not prefilled, and any additional profile data on pedigree animals you may have
c. Correct any erroneous information by over-typing the existing entry.
d. Indicate the animal's Source (how it came to be in your herd):
An animal must be added with a Source to ensure proper inclusion in reports. To indicate its Source on the Add Animal form, click the radio button next to the appropriate selection:
...And the applicable fields will display. Complete the required fields, and add any additional information you may want to enter related to the animal's Source:d. Indicate the animal's Source (how it came to be in your herd):
An animal must be added with a Source to ensure proper inclusion in reports. To indicate its Source on the Add Animal form, click the radio button next to the appropriate selection:

Step 4: Once you have completed all the fields you want to have information in, save the animal's Folder to you herd by clicking the Save button at the bottom of the Add Animal form:
Adding other animals that appear in the search results
You can add other animals that appear in the search results by following the same steps detailed above. You do not have to re-run the search each time.
Adding animals using another herd's US DHIR Herd Id
You can add animals using any valid US DHIR Herd Id, even if the herd id does not belong to you or the herd is no longer on milk test. This is especially helpful if you purchase a large number of animals from a herd that was or is on milk test as you don't have to find the animals individually using the Add Registered Animal functions.
