Adding progressive reproductive stages and Breeding Outcomes
Breeding Outcomes
The breeding outcome is the current state of the breeding event. It allows you to track the animal’s reproductive status for management purposes, as well as giving you a tool to analyze your individual animals' and herd's overall reproduction success.
If you are adding record for recent breeding, most likely you will select "Serviced/Exposed" as that is about all you can know about the breeding. As that animal progresses through their reproductive cycle, the Breeding record can be updated to reflect more current knowledge of the Breeding, such as if the animal is confirmed pregnant, or if the breeding was unsuccessful.
The breeding outcomes and their purpose are:
- Unsuccessful. If your animal comes back into estrus, close the breeding with this outcome. Doing so moves the breeding from the Current Breeding section to the History, and will remove the animal from the Currently Bred report and Kidding Schedule.
- Pregnant. Once you've confirmed your animal is pregnant you may want to update the breeding outcome to this state. This will allow you to report on animals that have confirmed pregnancies.
- Kidded. Adding a kidding event will automatically update the breeding outcome to Kidded. This outcome allows you to add information about the birth and kids.
- Terminated Early. If an animal aborts or delivers prematurely, use this outcome. A delineation you could use between this outcome and Kidded is the average age of kid viability. This outcome allows you to add information about the birth and kids.
- False Pregnancy. This action closes the breeding and allows you to report on instances of false pregnancies to determine trends and make management decisions.
Adding a Breeding Outcome to one parent's record will automatically add it to the other's.
A breeding record will remain in the Current Breeding section until it is closed using one of the end-stage breeding outcomes.
Re-breeding Animals
If your animal doesn't settle from a breeding, update the Current Breeding record to the Unsuccessful outcome and enter a record for the new breeding rather than editing the old record. This will allow you to have a more comprehensive view into your animals' and herd's overall reproductive success.
